Faces made the short journey to Manford Way hoping to avenge the recent narrow home defeat two weeks previously. Manager Gareth ‘slim’ Collins returned looking fresh following a recent stint in rehab. Jon Wightman and Wayne Wilkinson came into the side at the expense of Dave Day & Stuart David who dropped to the bench.
The game started with the home side flying out of the traps and playing some nice football on a big pitch. Faces were being ran ragged in the open exchanges and it was no was surprise when the home side opened the scoring on the 5th minute mark when the early pressure told with the Manford forward converted from close range.
Faces were struggling to get a foothold in the game as the home side dominated and attacked in waves. It seemed it was only a matter of time before the home side scored again and this was confirmed on 15 minutes when the on-rushing forward beat keeper Chris Lipman to a long through ball and promptly lobbed the keeper to make it 2-0.
The home side well were on top and continued to dominated and made it 3-0 after half an hour when a speculative long range effort cannoned back off the crossbar to the feet of the Manford forward who converted with ease. Faces held out until half time to go in 3-0 down.
Some home truths were exchanged at half time and Faces were urged to play with a bit of pride as the first half was frankly embarrassing. Oti Ikomi came on for Ricky Downs at the break. The second half commenced and Faces began on the front foot and started to boss the game. Oti began to dominate the midfield and chances started to come with Jon Wightman, Damien Yoxall and Roy Darbo all going close.
Faces were continuing to play much better football than the first half and were reward on the 55th minute mark when Oti Ikomi fired in a left footed volley from outside the box which cannoned in off the post. 3-1.
Faces were now well on top of the home side who began to sit back. Faces cranked up the pressure and created chances. On the 80th minute mark Roy Darbo fired in a low shot into the bottom corner to further reduce the arrears. 3-2. Faces sensed an unlikely point and continued to bomb forward and were unlucky on a number of occasions. The final whistle blew with Manford Way hanging on for dear life as in the first game between the two sides. Final score Manford Way 3 Faces 2.
Star man: Oti Ikomi – Changed the game, bossed midfield and great goal.
Coaches verdict: Great second half performance, but unfortunately not quite enough after the first half debacle. Cant keep giving teams a start.
