Match Report 29.08.09: Faces Reserves 2 Harold Wood Athletic Reserves 0
The reserves welcomed defending champions Harold Wood in their first fixture of the 2009/10 season. Summer signings Oti Ikombi, Daniel Dani (So good they named him twice!) and Wayne Wilkinson all made their debuts after impressing in pre-season.
The game began in blustery conditions at a furious pace with both teams competing well and matching each other for effort and commitment. Defenders were certainly on top in the opening stages with neither team really creating any chances.
Club captain Gary Bird was forced off after 20 minutes with suspected ligament damage which is likely to turn out to be only a grazed knee! The deadlock was broken on the half hour mark from the most unlikely of sources. Goalkeeper Shaun Crocker, who's kicking had been excellent all game in difficult conditions, launched a goal kick deep into the opponents half. Hesitation by the Harold Wood keeper allowed the ball to bounce in the box and the ball sailed over the stranded keeper into an empty net.
Inspired by 'the monk' Faces began to knock the ball about more freely and were starting to get the upper hand. They were rewarded further when Jamie Orr picked out the bottom corner with a sweet volley from the edge of the box to make the half time score Faces 2 - 0 Harold Wood.
The second half was a real battle in which both sides fought hard to try and gain the upper hand. Faces certainly had control of the midfield in which Oti Ikombi & Liam Dooley were outstanding. Oti in particular going on a run 1 length of the field which ended with the defender kicking him as he had no other way of stopping him!
Faces defended superbly in the second half, particularly well marshalled at the back by the impressive Wayne Wilkinson. Harold Wood could only really carve out 1 chance which was headed over the bar under pressure. As the game progressed Faces began to counter attack at speed and Jamie Moughton and Jon Wightman were both unlucky not to score.
Final Score - Faces 2 - 0 Harold Wood
Manager's Verdict: Great performance against a very good team - bodes well for the season.
